Knowledge, Experience
and Integrity.
Quality Genetics International Pty Ltd (QGI) was established to select, collect and distribute nationally and internationally, the best Wagyu semen from an array of top quality Wagyu sires outside of Japan.
Meet the team behind QGI, boasting over 80+ years of experience producing Wagyu combined.
We are a team of four experienced Wagyu producers, joining forces to access and utilise the world’s best Wagyu genetics, making them available to the rest of the Wagyu industry.

Bishop Wagyu
Born and Raised in the Hunter Valley of NSW Australia, Peter grew up on the land helping run the family Hereford Stud (Wootton Polled Herefords) for 25 years. Working off farm on Merino and Santa Gertrudis Studs owned by the Armstrong family and Tywnam Pastoral Company he gained experience in corporate agriculture and sound family business practices.
Educated to a tertiary level in Agricultural Management, Peter applied his learnings on to the family business, which could be said as sometimes reluctantly received! Not long after this, their business had a fundamental change in direction due to small margins in Hereford cattle. This led to investing in Wagyu Cattle in 1996 and founding his family stud Kuro Kin Wagyu.
For 20 years they exported cattle to Japan and New Zealand as well as moving genetics all around Australia. Kuro Kin Wagyu turned off 1200 F1’s annually and sold about 80 Bulls annually.
Peter & Philippa Bishop, owners of Bishop Wagyu
Peter was on the AWA Board as Treasurer from 2005 – 2012.

Board member of the RLBP and LLS from 2005 – 2016 in the Hunter Valley and Central West.
In 2015/16 Kuro Kin Wagyu was sold, Peter, Philippa, and their 3 boys worked for the new owners helping set up their new business before moving to Cowra NSW, where they have since established Bishop Wagyu.
At Bishop Wagyu, they apply all the lessons learnt in the 25 years of producing Wagyu to their new business, to make sure their level of excellence in the industry is maintained.
For these reasons, Peter has been fortunate to meet great friends like Michael, Brian and Joe along the Wagyu Journey.
QGI has been formed based on their combined 80-year experience of breeding Wagyu to enable access to and utilisation of the world’s best Wagyu genetics, making it available to the rest of the Wagyu industry.

3D Genetics
Joe Grose has been involved in the Wagyu industry for over twenty-five years owning and operating a Wagyu breeding herd enterprise in Queensland, Australia. His involvement in the industry has extended to being both a board member and President of the Australian Wagyu Association (AWA).
Graduating from the University of Queensland in Brisbane with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Joe spent his early years focusing on consulting to the dairy and pig industries; two industries which rely on the collection of objective data on inputs and outputs to make informed operating and financial decisions.

In 1997, Joe purchased imported Wagyu weaner heifers, that were progeny of the Japanese breeder Shogo Takeda from Hokkaido prefecture in northern Japan. These were some of the first full-blood cattle to be imported into Australia. From these heifers, Joe has built a highly respected commercial Wagyu herd.
Over the years Joe has developed a passion for genetic evaluation and improvement. He is dedicated to using technically sound scientific methodologies with the Wagyu industry.
He has actively pursued researching and developing his breeding herd by using the statistical tool, Best Linear Unbiased Prediction (BLUP) as a technique for estimating the genetic merit of traits of interest for an individual animal whilst accounting for non-genetic (environmental) effects.
Joe has always been highly conscious of the impact that livestock operations and his management decisions has on productivity, profitability and importantly, sustainability.
In recent years his company, 3D Genetics, developed one of Australia’s most innovative SMART farms at Inverell, on the northern tablelands of New South Wales, ‘Pukawidgi’.

Pukawidgi has been developed to maximise the efficiency of livestock and farming operations whilst minimising the impact of uncontrollable factors such as droughts. Its development always ensures available feed and water to ensure the livestock herd is never compromised. This is assisted using satellite imagery to assist with pasture management, adequate infrastructure to preserve water and fodder, and exceptional animal health and livestock nutrition practices.

3D Genetics bulls are licenced to quality Wagyu operators traversing the entire length of eastern Australia and recently this been extended to include clients in Western Australia.3D Genetics is presently undertaking a large progeny test with our Wagyu bulls, joining more than 10,000 commercial breeding cows per year. The resultant Wagyu and Wagyu X progeny are followed through the production system to enable quality carcase data flow through to the genetic analysis to continually improve the genetic traits of the 3D Genetics herd.

Koolang Wagyu
Michael grew up in Armidale NSW, an important cattle region of Australia. Without the necessary capital to go on the land, he went to University and became a banker which seemed like the right way to build a base. This led Michael to travel to Switzerland and then in 1990 to Tokyo where he worked for three years as head of Capital Markets Asia for Morgan Stanley. An amazing opportunity and his first exposure to Wagyu.
Michael was Chairman of ING bank until January 2020. In 1993 Michael returned to Australia as head of Institutional Banking at CBA and in 2001 acquired Clear Hills as a small cattle business. In 2003 he and his wife, Frederique, bought their first Wagyu bull for our Angus heifers. In 2004 they bought a few more full blood heifers and started an embryo transfer program.

With over 200 full blood Wagyu cows their Wagyu business, trading under the brand: Koolang Wagyu Australia, has become a very successful operation. They continue to run a self-replacing Angus herd of about 400 cows which are also used to produce F1s. This was a huge honour and an amazing learning experience. They struggled with the key issues of the day which were about protecting the brand and building the reputation of Wagyu in Australia and beyond.

Putting together QGI has been exciting. The combined experience of the four principals is amazing. A shared belief in the power of genetics and selection pressure to improve outcomes for the industry from breeders to processers to consumers is fantastic.
We focus on selecting balanced genetics that are predicted to produce highly profitable progeny.
Structured Progeny Test Program.
All sires selected by QGI are undergoing a structured progeny test program run across all four of the director’s nucleus herds. The progeny tests programs include a special focus on contemporary group structure, objective carcasse image data and the use of highly accurate and well known benchmark sires. A further component of the progeny test will be an assessment of feed intake/efficiency data.
Commitment to Science.
QGI is committed to the science involved in production of quality genetics – QGI is dedicated to producing premium products.
Outstanding Quality.
QGI has outstanding full-blood Wagyu sires that have completed quarantine and have attained health clearance for semen export to various international regions. QGI has mandated that all sires in the bull battery are free of all known Wagyu recessive conditions.
